Soldier

The soldier man was leaving home,
On his back was his usual backpack,
But today it felt weightless,
His heart was racing,
His mind was reminiscing,
The beautiful voice of his wife praying,
The tears from his daughter seeing him leaving,
The two were his world if not the universe,
But he had to heed to the call of service,
Though it wasn't taking long,
He swore to keep his daughter's promise,
The kiss from his daughter kept him strong,
The war was fought day and night,
During the day the scorching sun was only,
but salt to the wounds,
Still the cold nights froze the weary muscles,
All what the solder man wanted was an end to it,
though the nights were sleepless,
his family was still in his dreams
The army proved strong for the rebels,
One by one the rebels were falling,
In no time the army was winning,
Soon dawning came, it was time to get back home,
Joy was falling from the sky like rains,
the wounded felt no pain,
Time seemed to have paused,
The convoy driving out of the camps,
On the soldier man's hand was a photo,
It was him and his family,
He opened his mouth to smile knowing it's over,
Screams and wails overcrowded his voice,
Pain unknown overshadowed his joy,
He took a second look at the photo,
But blackout!
Slowly the universe was drifting away,
He tried moving,
but even his fingers were heavy for him,
Some force was pulling him away,
All he heard was his daughter,
"Daddy please bring me a teddy bear"
Though voiceless, he forced to say the words
"I promise"
As the infinite darkness covered him,
He knew his daughter was waiting,
But he had failed!
Maybe in a later life...
