Today is the day that my mind travels back
To a cold, January night
A rather spontaneous, unforgettable journey Ventured into uncharted territory
Through a sea of traffic and tail lights, I drove
Fueled by butterflies
Revved in anticipation
Nervous excitement flooding my entire body
I prayed, incessantly, for a safe arrival
News and weather a monotonous mantra
Clammy, death-grip clench on the steering wheel Repeated redirection of my attention to the road
The miles and minutes ticked by, city after city
At once, I arrived
Easing into my new surroundings, I was trembling
The reality took a few moments to sink in
Months of waiting, years of wondering
You met me with a warm, welcoming embrace
We shared a couple of long-awaited, precious hours And a reluctant goodbye
I still quiver over the territory I travelled that night The emotion and connection it solidified
The certainty of knowing how right it felt
And the yearning it still stirs, to this day
