Sometimes I curse my mirror
For the thoughts it whispers to me,
For the beauty in veracity it paints in me.
Because perhaps if I had mixed my whites with shades of gold,
If I had concealed my blues with tints of glee,
You probably would have chosen me.
But the mirror never lies —
It traces every fracture I try to hide,
Reflects the softness in my silence,
And the weight of words I never said.
It doesn't smooth the jagged edges
Or tint my truth with the colors you preferred.
I used to think honesty was enough —
That baring my soul would be the bridge,
Not the boundary.
That being seen in full would invite you closer,
Not send you seeking simpler lights,
More polished frames.
Sometimes I wonder—
If I had smiled more often, even when it hurt,
If I had dimmed my storms and danced through the rain,
Would you have stayed long enough
To see the sky clear?
Still, the mirror stands, unchanged.
And I,
Still standing in front of it,
Learning to love the version it refuses to hide.
