The first time my eyes met you,
I saw a replica of someone I had loved unconditionally
See I have been raised to believe in a white Jesus and an invisible God
I'm a black son, and I'm obsessed with everything that is dark
And here you were, another dark tunnel for me
In you, with all my uncertainties
I had to find light and carve my own path of light
In you, I had to learn to love you the white you
In you, I had to confine myself to find me
In you, I lost myself
The first time you said "hi"
I lost myself for a second
Your voice was the rekindled the sound of love in my soul
I got to my feet for you
Then you started walking away
I got drunk in your footsteps, I tripped and fell in love with you
The first time I knew who you really were
You were a sentence with no punctuation marks
A map without boundaries
I had loved you in a language I couldn't speak
I wrote you a million poems
But I never found the right words to make you leave the page for me
The next time I see your face
I'll pull my bag off my back
And pull out the things I haven't been able to do since you turned your back against me
I'll pull out a smile
Then say
"Hi"
"I'm glad you're happy, even if not with me"
And I'll put my bag back, and keep walking
