Summer Evening

A hot summer evening settles down
With smell of steaks in passage ways
Six o’clock
The burnt out
End of Smokey days
And now a gusty shower wraps
The grimy scraps
Of withered leaves about your feet
and
newspapers from vacant lots
the showers beat
on broken blinds and chimney pots
and at the corner of the street
a lonely lass stands against the wall
whistling at the drunken chaps on their way home
a cab next steams and stamps
and then the lighting of the lamps
leads the way to the night in the hood
