The Differing Silence

A thousand different ways the silence exists
And every single one of them is loud
The awkward silence between two people—
A conversation left unspoken
Eyes locking from across a bar—
The future of love dragging
The silent anger simmering in the air—
Words are never needed
You'll sit and think of all the times you could have been clearer,
The billion different encounters that you've been misunderstood
Hiding your eyes like they're a portal
When all you needed was the right look
Every iris stays one colour
And yet they change with the feelings bubbling inside
You'll look into someone's eyes,
And suddenly, they'll go from sage green to olive
And then you know their feelings tipped like a table
Light blue to a dark sea—
Golden brown to a muddy earth—
The silence is loud,
And so are our eyes
However little they may speak,
They are louder than most moving lips
