The Girl and The Leaf

Brief gusts of howling winds mess up my nicely combed hair
I am stunned still as my eyes wander
Following the flow of a dancing girl
She is dancing under a dying tree
How ironic
She who is so filled of life
Under a tree which is so close to death
As she dances multiple leaves fall
Leaving a trail of past memories
Another warm breeze passes by
Taking the final leaf with it
This leaf flows down in an unnatural manner
Like it is being guided by a supernatural force
It falls before the dancing girls feet
She finishes a twirl and then stops
Our eyes meet and I immediately look away
Acting like I haven't been watching her this entire time
She bends down and picks up the leaf
Her legs start to move
Her direction befuddles me
She is heading my direction
I begin to tense up, but for some reason stand my ground
Our eyes lock as she walks towards me
She finally arrives only inches from my sweat drenched face
Neither of us say a word
She reaches a hand out
The hand with the leaf
Without thinking I take the leaf
However I have so many questions for this girl
But I can't muster a single word
We keep our silent gaze
"Keep this leaf as a reminder."
Her angelic voice brings me back to reality
"What do you..."
She puts her finger to my lip
"A reminder that life is short."
This statement shocks me
"I don't understand?"
Before I can get my answer she swiftly walks away
Disappearing into the common mass
"Life is short."
Her words are weighing heavily on my mind
"Why would a girl who I have never met tell me that?"
I wish I could have gotten more answers
But sadly I have a feeling I will never see that girl again
I keep thinking back on what she said
Everything that I have done till now brings me to my knees
I come to a realization that I have been afraid to do anything
For I haven't done anything
With her words weighing on my heart and the leaf she gave me in my hand
I come to a resolution
"From this day forward I will live every day like it is my last."
So with those words and a leaf from a girl that I never knew
And would never get to know
I lived my life to the fullest
