The Mirror

When i was a young child i knew not what i looked like.
My life was happy and busy, i cared not about my sight.
I wore my clothes with great confidence.
Never a moment feeling judged or tense
I thought i was as dark as the night and i loved my black skin.
I spent my days frolicking with friends.
The quiet moments i spent reading books of suspense.
Then one day i looked in the mirror.
Although it was different, I liked what i saw.
My big dreamy eyes, small mouth and the sharp curve of my jaw.
I went out, out into the world among people of cruel minds.
My days of mirror-looking became harsh times.
The mirror now reflected a flawed face.
A lean mouth, big nose, sad eyes, discolouration - my features looked displaced.
I stopped staring in the mirror because i didnt want to see.
All the imperfections that haunted me.
I turned the mirror's face to the wall.
Scared to see the creature with numerous flaws.
