The Monster....a metaphor of addiction

I once visited with the monster
and he wasn't very nice.
He wrapped his hands around my soul
with fingers, cold as ice.
He told me he'd take care of me.
He said he wanted to be my friend.
But little did I know
that was the beginning of the end.
He took his good'ole time
playing with my heart and with my mind
and by the time that he was through
the me I once was, I couldn't find.
He made me believe that I needed him,
my life would never be complete
without his arm's around me,
so I surrendered in defeat.
My days were cold and lonely,
my friends and family, no longer around.
I was lost somewhere in his darkness,
and to the monster, I was bound.
My lips spoke words with no meaning,
my eyes could see but had no sight.
My life had no meaning, just sleeping and eating
because his darkness had covered my light.
I only drew breath because I had to,
my heart only beat to keep me alive.
My body was there but my spirit was gone
and I'm not sure how I ever survived.
My soul was shattered, my mind was numb,
my self esteem, he had broken to the core.
He had covered me with his darkness
and I was me no more.
I no longer wanted to be alive.
I only wished to breathe my final breath.
For all the hurt that I had suffered,
I would find my peace in death.
Yes, I'd rather have had death as a friend
because I felt like I'd already died.
The shell of my body was all that remained
of the person I once was inside.
But God, in all his glory
was not going to let that be,
for he had other plans for my life
and throu the darkness, sent a light for me.
He gave me reason to live again,
my work on earth was not done,
and if I let the darkness destroy me
then the monster would have won.
I found the strength to live again
some how, some way, some where,
and left the cold clutches of the monster
in the darkness that was holding me there.
I've broken free, I've found myself,
and with the good Lord by my side, I will fight
to never again, with his darkness
let the monster cover my light.
It has made me stronger, it has made me wiser
and it has made me who I am today.
I almost paid for it with my life
and that's to big of a price to pay.
