The Path

I am beginning to love the sound
That my own footsteps make,
As I identify things not meant for me,
And learn to leave them in my wake.
Towards the future, away from the past,
I feel myself begin to gravitate,
I concentrate, counting each yard,
keeping rythm as my footsteps reverberate.
I'm hoping the further I venture,
The less I will have to try,
To convince myself that I'm happy,
And that the smile on my face doesn't lie.
The path is growing brighter,
my deep breaths are coming lighter,
thank God above I held on for this,
thank God that I'm a fighter.
I can feel the burden lifting,
I emit a relieved sigh,
Maybe now there's a chance to find joy,
Someday before I die.
Before I began this journey,
I had too many wounds to ever keep track,
They were enormous ghastly craters,
now they are quickly becoming cracks.
I continue healing,
As I quicken up my pace,
For the first time in a long time,
A smile comes naturally to my face.
I'm always expecting the misery,
but it's not here in this new place,
Now when I glance behind me,
there is nothing giving chase.
I didn't plan this journey,
I just left and cut all ties,
when I could no longer stand my reflection,
or the look of sadness in my own eyes.
I don't know my destination,
Or where my future lies,
No maps or road signs to guide me,
I follow the path and watch the skies.
Its not about what I'm running from,
But about what I'm running toward,
I am now done dwelling on the past,
I've done it more than I can afford.
Not knowing where it led,
I saw this path and decided to take it,
because the journey is the best part,
And the destination is what you make it.
