the prairie

we look out
at the prairie
knees touching
share my cigarette
muse about nothing
befalling upon each other
time and again
soaked into the trees
the moonlight
basking us onto
the grass
we don’t say
certain words
but we fill
this entire landscape
as if we’ve become it
the prairie stands
in willful silence with
ancient confidence
wildlife abounds
beating and erratic
here we are everywhere
the prairie stares back
as we’re lost to
the breeze
palpable and elusive
inevitable and contained
we linger
