The Soldier's Path

I walk the severed road.

A path that's scarcely traveled.

I hold my head up high.

Though at times I feel unraveled.

I think of times I've lived.

Laughed, loved and sometimes cried.

I carry weight immense.

Through trials true and tried.

I wandered in the darkness.

With days that met no end.

I've followed rules unwavering.

Although they too can bend.

My shoulders are like bronze.

My feet not unlike leather.

I've struggled in the peace.

And battled in the weather.

When my watch met its end.

I felt a place, confusing.

A diamond in the rough.

Spent coin without my choosing.

Though sometimes I may fret.

Of losing life and limb.

The people I protect.

Are often far too dim.

For those that I've been charged with.

I take their tolls in stride.

Facing all their demons.

While they wait inside and hide.

But bitter, I know not.

For its a path I walk alone.

To provide for them a future.

I will sacrifice my own.
