The Space Between Us
I’m sitting by the window now, watching rain streak down the glass, and I keep asking myself the same thing I’ve turned over in my head a hundred times: What does love even mean?
I thought I’d figured it out once—when warm hands held mine, when laughter felt like the only thing that mattered. But somehow, it all slipped through my fingers as easy as sand. One moment it was there, solid and real, and the next it was just… gone. When it hit me—when I realized how deep it had rooted in me—I didn’t push it away. I let it crash over me, let it tear through every wall I’d built, and then I picked up the pieces and walked forward. I didn’t look back.
People say second chances are gifts. Maybe they are. But I’ve never been able to reach for them. Not with you. We still talk sometimes—ask how work is, share a joke about old times. But there’s a quiet distance between us now, like we’re friends who don’t quite know each other anymore, strangers who once shared everything. And that’s okay.
I don’t hold out hope for what we could have been. I can’t—not when I know how much it hurt before, how the same hands that held me could leave me feeling so empty. I won’t put myself through that again with the same person.
So I’ve decided to just… wander. To take each day as it comes, to laugh until my sides ache and soak in every sunset I can catch. Life is short, and I want to fill the time I have with light before it fades. Maybe along the way, I’ll learn what love really is. Maybe I’ll find something worth fighting for—and this time, I’ll be brave enough to stand my ground. 🌘✨01082026 ©LanZhan
