There is no denying that social media has changed the way we communicate with different people. From sharing our thoughts to planning where we want to go on vacation it is mostly posted or contained on our social media accounts just like Facebook and Twitter. Social media for us is the bridge to have communication with more people, it helps in having friends even when they are far away. By making friends in distant places, the language develops and our vocabulary expands. Social media also helps a lot in our language because we get a lot of information or knowledge on social media, just like having new words: barkada, balikbayan, and gimmick. But this is also wrong because with the development of social media, with the forgetting of the old languages that came from our ancestors and also translating the language of mixed English which is becoming slang for some of our Filipinos. Another negative effect of this is that young people prefer to talk only on social networking sites rather than in person because for them it is faster and they use it more often. We must have a balance and limit in our use of social media, we must not forget our language, we must use social media in the right way and in what we know will help to develop our language.
