They Say.

They say I'm forgiven.
And that I can break free.
But the poison I've earned.
Is a friend called misery.

They say that it's over.
And that I can go home.
But the battle continues.
I just fight it alone.

They say I'm a hero.
And give me my dues.
But medals are scars.
That they say "you must use"

They say I look handsome.
And I'm looking well.
But my mind has been ransomed.
I'm stuck in this hell.

They say I was a soldier.
And they'll recall me that way.
But now I am buried.
That's how it should stay.

They sing songs of valor.
And praise up my name.
But the things I have done.
We should all be ashamed.

They say that it's over.
And I'm out of my fight.
But now my wife's crying.
My kids won't sleep at night.

They say it was selfish.
And I should have stayed.
But I know they don't mean it.
I know why I swayed.

They said it was a battle.
And I had no way to win.
But the truth is much simpler.
I decided to give in.

They said it was the whiskey.
And the Marlboro's I puffed.
But they had no idea.
That my soul had been snuffed.

They say they forgive me.
And that I had broke free.
But the truth is, they earned.
A friend called misery.
