Those Better Days

I’m so sad that the last five years
Have been so hard on you
You’ve lived with my mental illness
Something others couldn’t do.

I’m always torn apart inside
Because the illness hurts you so
In order to protect yourself
You’ve had to let me go.

I miss you from those better days
When you weren’t afraid for me
When we didn’t know I had an illness
That others couldn’t see.

I remember trying to teach you
How to ride your little bike
Or how to play with your siblings
Without getting in a fight.

So this one last time I’ll hold you
If you can find a new trust in me
And I’ll love you as your father
For all the world to see.
