Well I grew up in Kentucky
With a railroad at my back
And I lived there with my family
In a rundown one-room shack.
I'd walk along the railroad
As I watched the trains go by
And listen to that sorrowful sound
Of a lonesome whistle cry.
I worked on that damn Railroad
Like my papa and his before
We'd work hard for the money
We'd lose at the Company Store.
Then one day I met my missus
Nothin prettier would you see
Comin' from the other side of the track
Where she'd lived in prosperity.
Livin that railroad life was real hard
And we'd struggle everyday
Then they'd work us all the harder
To just steal away our pay.
When she told me she was leavin
I just didn't know what to say
I'd tried so hard to give her everything
Til that damn train took my girl away.
Now I'm tied to that old steam engine
Goin' a hundred down the track
And I don't know where I'm going
But I aint never coming back.
No I don't know where I'm goin
But I ain't never coming back.
