Tongues Don't Leave Bruises

Tongues Don't Leave Bruises
They said it softly,
so the world wouldn’t hear.
Wrapped the knife in laughter,
called it truth, called it care.

No fists raised,
just words,
sharp enough to redraw my face
in the mirror of their voice

.You’re too much.”
“You’re nothing.”
“You’re lucky I stay.”

Each sentence
a brick laid on my chest,
until breathing felt like begging
for permission to exist.

They never yelled,
they edited me.
Trimmed my joy.
Corrected my tone.
Taught me silence
was safer than speaking whole.

But listen,
I am unlearning their language.

I am naming the harm
that hid behind jokes,
behind love that sounded like control,
behind words that fed on my doubt.

Your voice does not own my worth.
Your mouth is not my maker.

I am louder than the echo you left in me.
And today,
I choose words that heal
over words that hurt.
