Toxic Relationship

I crossed my legs and heaved a sigh
as I sat by the anti-Christ.
He filled my glass with bitter-sweet wine,
and as I drank it, my mouth became a desert
through which I could not speak.
Words fluttered from his lips, landed upon
my soul and ate away at the integrity of it
like moths eating away at fine white linen.
And slowly he sucked away my breath, as cats,
in old wives' tales, sucked away the breath of babies.
I leaned back with a heavy sigh
as I sat by the Grim Reaper.
He had set before me a plate from which I ate, that muddled
my mind and led my thoughts away from the path of salvation.
And little by little I could feel him draw
the breath of life from my soul.
And as I glanced at my reflection in the mirror on the wall
I could see, that even then, I was just a shadow
of who I once was.
