Two Ships Passing in the Night

Two Ships Passing in the Night
These feelings
they don’t make sense.
They don’t belong anywhere.

But they’re still here.

I avoid you now.
Not out of anger,
not even out of distance,
but because I know
what your voice does to me.

How easily it pulls me back
to something I was never supposed to keep.

We didn’t have time
to become anything real
at least, not in the way that lasts.

But somehow
we had enough time
for me to tell you everything.

And I did.

Things I don’t say out loud.
Things I barely admit to myself.
I gave them to you
without hesitation,
like I trusted you
before I even understood why.

You were my safe place.

And maybe that’s the problem
you came into my life
when everything was falling apart,
when I needed someone
more than I needed to think.

You were there.
You stayed.

And I left.

Not suddenly,
not cruelly,
just… in the direction
I thought I was supposed to go.

Still-

sometimes it catches me off guard.
A voice, your voice
a memory,
something small,

and there you are again.

Not enough to undo anything.
Not enough to change my path.
But enough to remind me
that something real existed
in a moment
that wasn’t meant to last.

I don’t reach out.
I won’t.

But I remember.

And I’m grateful,
more than I let myself admit,
that, for a little while,
you were mine,
and I was yours.

Even if we were
just two ships passing in the night.
