ugly is a feeling
Today I met this ugly man just as I entered Pick n' Pay. I watched him grab a trolley with the excitement of a 5 year old and drift it like a car racer towards the fruits section. I swear his face looked like the ginger racked on the opposite aisle. He had this unkempt hair, a dusty shoe and a t shirt screaming to get off his skinny little body. He picked a bunch of bananas and as he went to get them weighed, he greeted the attendant with a zeal best friend's usually exhibit and you would have assumed they knew each other, but they didn't. The ugly man proceeded to ask for his name and he walked away with a swagger of rich men. But you could tell he wasn't rich, it wasn't the first time I saw him. I trailed this man just out of curiosity and when he reached the cereal section, there stood a gorgeous woman with a to-die-for baby on her back. The ugly man looked even more uglier standing by the side of such beauty. To my shock, the cute baby grabbed the ugly man's dirty collar as though to grab his attention. The ugly man obliged and giggled at the baby, showing his outrageously yellow teeth. The child, obviously innocent, giggled back with utter joy as the man complimented the mother on her pretty baby. The man went on to buy a few more things that didn't even fill the entire basket yet he stood at the back of the queue as though he had bought the whole store. As he walked out the door, he joked with the security guard about why they tear the receipt and to my shock, his wasn't torn, the guard just let him go. And here I was, thinking only beautiful people get their way. When I got back home, the behavior of this ugly man really got to me. Like how can you be that ugly and not notice? Later that night, as I was changing into my sleeping clothes, I saw the ugly man staring at me in the mirror....and he whispered, "ugly is a feeling you choose to wear, be happy with who you are."
