We Are All Alone in This Together — Part II
By ThisIsMe_263

Some nights
the darkness doesn’t sit beside me —
it sits inside me,
like something borrowed my ribs
and forgot to give them back.

I try to breathe,
but the air feels thick,
like I'm inhaling all the things
I never said out loud.
All the fears I swallowed
just to keep the peace.

People say,
“We’re all going through something,”
like it’s meant to comfort me —
but some storms
don’t look the same from the outside.

My storm doesn’t roar.
It whispers.
It crawls into my bones
and rearranges the shape of my hope.

I scroll, scroll, scroll—
faces, captions, victories—
and suddenly everyone is living
while I’m trying to remember
how to survive.

They say we aren’t alone,
but tell me —
where are they
when the room goes silent
and my mind starts screaming?

Where are they
when my thoughts turn into knives
and every memory becomes a blade?

Where are they
when the night feels endless
and tomorrow feels optional?

I know they care.
I do.
But caring doesn’t reach
the place where the darkness hides.
It doesn’t crawl deep enough
to pull me out
when I’m drowning quietly.

Some days,
I’m scared of how well
I’ve learned to pretend.
How easy it is
to smile with a mouth full of fear,
to laugh while my chest caves in.

And the worst part?
No one suspects a thing.

Because depression doesn’t always look sad —
sometimes it looks normal,
polite,
productive.
Sometimes it looks like a person
who’s tired of explaining
a pain they can’t articulate.

Maybe we are together
in theory—
but in practice,
pain is personal.
Isolation is intimate.
And some battles
don’t have witnesses.

So tonight,
I will not lie to myself.
I will not pretend it’s just a phase.
I will not sugarcoat the truth
for the sake of hope.

I’ll say it plainly:

I’m breaking.
Quietly.
Consistently.
And the world keeps spinning
like nothing happened.

Maybe that’s what it really means
to be human —
to suffer loudly inside your head
while your life continues
in calm, orderly lines.

We are all alone
in our darkest corners,
in our sharpest thoughts,
in the shadows we don’t admit to.

We are all alone
in this together…

but tonight?

The “together”
feels very, very far away.
