When the Cannons Go Silent

When the cannons go silent
The soldiers are dead
They gave up their lives
They died in our stead.
In fields of blood they
Cowered from the shells
They didn't have to die
They were already in hell.
Like any young one
Who never expects to die
They never believed it'd be
Their mothers who'd cry.
In pieces on the field
Their young bodies lay
Their voices all silenced
Leaving no-one to pray.
But prayer doesn't help
When you're already dead
Left rotting in a hole
Instead of dying in bed.
Goodbye all good soldiers
Who gave up their lives
Who died for their children
Their husbands their wives.
I may not support war
But I'll Never Forget
That it's those young ones
Families who live in regret.
