Growing I used to wonder
what being a woman really meant
I wondered if a girl became a woman after her menarch
Or maybe when she conceives her first?
I wondered if being a woman meant going to school to end up in a man's kitchen
I wondered if it meant giving up yourself to please the man who took you into his house.
I wondered if it meant sacrificing all your dreams and aspirations to help achieve his
I wondered right from my girlhood into the sad world of realities
And I realized that even the dictionaries didn't hold the definitions of who a woman really is and all that she's capable of
