I'm 55 and man what a road,
many twists and turns along the way.
But I've lived this life, and it's lived me.
Could write a best selling book today.
Yes I've laughed, had many joyous times,
Have much in my life, I've been blessed.
But the tears of pain, and heartache, so raw,
Can overshadow the joy, I confess.
I used to be able to roll with the punches,
Stress...pffft, nothing, "but a thang"...
but years and years of dealing with it all,
takes it's toll, and makes it harder to "hang".
As I've aged, found myself, growing tired,
When does this roller coaster, calm down?
I'm just ready for a nice smooth ride.
"Happy Medium", ya know, Nothing Profound.
But that's just not meant for me.
I sigh deeply, as look down my road.
All I see are hills, twists and turns.
"Damn, WTF??, I'm too old."
"Why", is all that escapes my breath,
and a voice tells me to look back.
I turn around, and shyly, lift my head.
IT'S ALL MY FAULT, an obvious FACT.
What I saw, and still see today,
why it's a shock, I don't know.
It's shook me down to my core,
still feel it deep in my bones.

There were many times, that I took steps,
Never forced to make each one.
I was fully aware of each step taken,
and the choices were all my own.
You see, I believed in something, more than me.
And that if I resisted, or argued, WE'D fail.
Not realizing, I'd failed myself, by not,
Adding to my coffin, another, hammered nail.
Two statements, "To thine own self, be True",
"And unto God, you give Yourself."
I actually thought, that's how I'd lived my life,
But I find, I was LYING TO MYSELF.
REGRET...ahhh, now there's a word.
6 letters, harmless...or so it seems.
but with regret, is one absolute,
MOMENTS LOST, THAT CAN NEVER BE REDEEMED.
Oh, you can try and make up for some.
Others..... forever lost to the wind.
Because of choices made, long ago,
"What could have been", ALL GHOSTS, in the end.
Moments that will haunt you, on the daily,
there with you the rest of your life.
Regrets wait just outside the ether,
shit on your joy, and taint your smile.
They will never, ever go away.
At death's door, they will gather as one.
And to your grave, they too, will go with.
Even in death, they won't leave you, alone.

I wrote this today, for those of young,
Who might happen to read this in passing.
STRIVE TO MAKE CHOICES YOU'LL NEVER...REGRET.
THEY ARE MARKS ON YOUR LIFE,
THAT'S EVERLASTING!!
